Catalog Inclusion

Catalog inclusion is the state in which a product is eligible and available through catalog-based AI discovery routes. It is the entry ticket into AI channels — not a guarantee of recommendation.

Definition

Catalog inclusion means a product satisfies the eligibility requirements to enter a catalog-based AI discovery route, such as Shopify Catalog, and is therefore available to be surfaced by AI channels. Eligibility typically requires a product title, image, price, ship-to-market coverage, publication status, an identifiable product URL, and non-sensitive content.

Inclusion is a distribution prerequisite. It is necessary but not sufficient: it gives a product a route into AI discovery systems without determining whether the product will be chosen.

Why it matters

Many teams treat catalog inclusion as the finish line for AI commerce. They confirm products are eligible, published, and synced, and conclude the AI channel is covered. But inclusion only earns the right to be considered. The narrower revenue question is whether the product appears when a shopper asks for a specific kind of item — and that depends on recommendation readiness, not inclusion.

Example

A skincare product is catalog-eligible and synced into AI channels. It has a title, image, price, and ingredients. But when a shopper asks for a "fragrance-free moisturizer for reactive skin that works under makeup," the AI cannot confirm fragrance status, sensitivity fit, or routine step from the catalog record — so the included product is passed over.

Inclusion put the product on the shelf. It did not make the product the answer.

FAQ

Is catalog inclusion the same as recommendation readiness?

No. Catalog inclusion makes a product available to AI channels. Recommendation readiness is whether AI systems can understand, compare, trust, and select it for a specific shopper intent.

What does it take to be included in a catalog?

Typical requirements include a product title, image, price, ship-to-market coverage, publication status, an identifiable product URL, and non-sensitive content.
